CHIANG MAI, HOW TO GET THERE

Chiang Mai is on the northern of Thailand. Located at Latitude 18° 47' N Longitude 098° 59' E, approximately 310 meters above sea level, situated approximately 700 kilometers from Bangkok, and is the country's second largest province. Chiang Mai borders Myanmar on the north, Lamphun and Tak Provinces on the south, Chiang Rai, Lampang and Lamphun Provinces on the east and Mae Hong Son Province on the west.

By Bus ( 10-12 hours )

There are ordinary, 2nd class and 1st class air-conditioned buses leaving for Chiang Mai daily (8.00 a.m. to 09.00 p.m.) from the Bangkok's Northern Bus Terminal (Mochit 2 Bus Terminal). Private buses, which can be conveniently booked in tourist-oriented places in Bangkok, are also available. By Car ( 8 hours )

There are 2 routes from Bangkok to Chiang Mai by car.


1.Drive on Highway No.1 (Phahonyothin Road) and turn left to Highway No.32 (Asian Highway) prior to Ayutthaya which passing Ayutthaya, Ang Thong, Chai nat, Nakhon Sawan, then take Highway No. 117 to Phitsanulok and take Highway No. 11 passing Uttaradit, Phrae, Lampang, Lamphun and Chiang Mai.


2.From Nakhon Sawan, take Highway No. 1 passing Kamphaeng Phet, Tak, Lampang, then take Highway No. 11 to Lamphun and Chiang Mai.


The two routes are nearly same distance approximately 690 kilometers.


By Train ( 11-12 hours )

Express and rapid trains leave for Chiang Mai from Bangkoks Hua Lamphong Station several times daily. The trip takes about 11-12 hours for express trains. Please reserve your seats in advance for you more convenience. All Train are operated by the State Railways of Thailand.

 

It's easy to travel from Bangkok to Chiang Mai - Chiang Mai to Bangkok by train - the recommended option is either a convenient overnight journey in a comfortable sleeper, or a daytime journey through the countryside on the air-conditioned express railcar. Travelling by sleeper is effectively faster than flying, and less hassle, and it will save you a night in a hotel too. The scenery on the last third of the trip, up into the mountains approaching Chiang Mai, is particularly good. Even if you take the overnight sleeper, watching the sunrise from the train in the morning can be a great experience.
