Songkran Festival

Songkran Festival ( Sari New Year Festival of Chiang Mai city, Chiang Mai )

Date : 12-15 April 2008


The merriest of Thailand's festival is Songkran which starts on April 13 every year and lasts for 3 days. To the Thai people, this festival is one of "water throwing" and although it has religious significance, it usually turns into great fun. Everyone gets soaking wet and since it is the hottest season of the year, the custom is quite refreshing.

Loi Krathong Festaval

Loi Krathong ( Chiang Mai : Northern Lantern Festival & Yi Peng Loi Krathong )

Date : 11-13 November 2008

Venue: At Chiang Mai Municipal Office and citywide, Chiang Mai Province.

Activity: A dazzling procession of hanging lanterns, Krathongs, Phi Yi Peng, as well as light and sound presentation in the Ping River, activities of Loi Krathong in the past, Lanna Thai lifestyle, Lanna cultural performances, and sales of Lanna handicrafts.

Loi mean "to float" and Kratong mean "leaf cup" which is usually made of banana leaf. The leaf cups are well as a candle are use as an offering sacrificed to Mae Khongkha ( Mother of waters ).
